If you own Skagit County real estate or Whatcom County real estate, you’ve probably noticed the beautiful creatures who grace the fields of Skagit County as you drive on Interstate 5. Snow Geese are pretty hard to miss, especially when a large flock takes off at once! Approximately 55,000 of these amazing birds call Western Washington home during the winter.

You may not know it, but these birds travel great distances each year before returning to the Skagit River Delta from mid-October to early May each year — during the summer, most of these birds nest on Wrangel Island in Russia, northwest of the Bering Strait!

Next time you’re dozing in the passenger seat traveling on I-5 as you head home to Mount Vernon, Bellingham, or Ferndale, make sure you keep an eye out for these stunning snow-white visitors!

Sunny days and blossom-laden trees are just what the doctor ordered, and Whatcom County is getting lots of both! Nearly everywhere you look in Bellingham, Ferndale, Lynden and beyond, there are natural wonders to behold.

If you’ve been stuck in winter-indoors mode, it’s time to break out and get some fresh air in your lungs — there’s no better place to get into a Spring mindset than The Pacific Northwest when it’s all in bloom!

Looks like some imposters snuck into the tulip fields, huh?  Believe it or not, these are actually another species of tulip, and you’ll see many unexpected forms of this beautiful flower when you visit the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival.

I’m always surprised to talk to Whatcom County residents who tell me they’ve never been to the Festival.  People come from all over to witness these bright fields blooming at their peak, and if you live in Bellingham, Ferndale or Lynden, the drive isn’t far at all . . . so don’t miss this special celebration of spring!

Happy fall, everyone! Though we’re still enjoying beautiful sunny weather and clear skies, there’s definitely a chill on the wind and signs of the season are everywhere in Whatcom County. This pumpkin patch at Boxx Berry Farm in Ferndale is full of bright reminders of autumn – there are even red and white pumpkins dotted throughout the mass of orange. Pick out your pumpkins this week, or, for a true Pacific Northwest experience, wait for a rainy Saturday!

We caught a quick shot of this bee gathering pollen in Boxx Berry Farm’s U-pick field in Ferndale. Many of the flowers will soon be gone, as the dahlia fields are beginning to frost over in the morning air, but bees are still preparing for the long winter ahead.

Beekeepers in Whatcom County are busy doing the same, trying to ensure their hives’ survival through the cold winter months. It’s not an easy job/hobby, but support is available in the form of the Mt. Baker Beekeepers Association, which meets every second Wednesday of the month in North Bellingham. They tackle common issues – everything from swarming hives to yellow jacket invasion – and are a valuable resource for new beekeepers as well as long-time enthusiasts.
