Plenty of people are on the Mount Baker Highway today: it’s opening day for Mt. Baker’s ski and snowboard season!

afterstorm

Residents of Whatcom County got a little taste of Autumn’s louder side Saturday afternoon during a short thunderstorm. I don’t know about you, but as long as I’m inside out of the rain, I love thunder and lightning!

After the rain subsided, the leaves looked like they were on fire and we even saw a faint rainbow. This picture, taken near Sunset Pond in Bellingham’s Mount Baker neighborhood, was something I just had to show you. There are few things prettier than Fall in the Pacific Northwest!

bee3

We caught a quick shot of this bee gathering pollen in Boxx Berry Farm’s U-pick field in Ferndale. Many of the flowers will soon be gone, as the dahlia fields are beginning to frost over in the morning air, but bees are still preparing for the long winter ahead.

Beekeepers in Whatcom County are busy doing the same, trying to ensure their hives’ survival through the cold winter months. It’s not an easy job/hobby, but support is available in the form of the Mt. Baker Beekeepers Association, which meets every second Wednesday of the month in North Bellingham. They tackle common issues – everything from swarming hives to yellow jacket invasion – and are a valuable resource for new beekeepers as well as long-time enthusiasts.

library

Since its grand opening at Barkley Village last year, the newest branch of the Bellingham Public Library has met with rave reviews.  This 1,400 square-foot space offers computer/internet access, WiFi, a large children’s book section, and convenient hold/pick-up capabilities.  With cozy overstuffed chairs and bar seating for those with laptops, the Barkley Branch is a modern yet comfortable place for people to sit down with a good book.  To see more pictures of beautiful Barkley Village, see our Mount Baker neighborhood page.
