If you’re not sure where to get your Christmas lights fix in Whatcom County — look no further than the James Street Estates, a manufactured home community between King Mountain and Mount Baker neighborhoods (from the Guide Meridian, take Bakerview Road to James Street, and take a right. You’ll see the sign for James Street Estates on your left just past the Christmas Tree stand).

Most homes in this little community are decorated with sparkling lights and Christmas decorations, perfect to get you into that holiday mood!

We caught a quick shot of this bee gathering pollen in Boxx Berry Farm’s U-pick field in Ferndale. Many of the flowers will soon be gone, as the dahlia fields are beginning to frost over in the morning air, but bees are still preparing for the long winter ahead.

Beekeepers in Whatcom County are busy doing the same, trying to ensure their hives’ survival through the cold winter months. It’s not an easy job/hobby, but support is available in the form of the Mt. Baker Beekeepers Association, which meets every second Wednesday of the month in North Bellingham. They tackle common issues – everything from swarming hives to yellow jacket invasion – and are a valuable resource for new beekeepers as well as long-time enthusiasts.
